🌿 Take I Spy outdoors and turn it into a language-learning game! 🔎

Start with the classic “I Spy…” and then change the rules to target different skills:

🐝 Something that rhymes with “bee”

You can easily adapt the prompts to suit your child’s age and goals and because you’re playing outside, you can keep it fun, natural and movement-based!

🌿 Turn your next

🌿 Turn your next nature walk into a storytelling adventure! 🌿

You don’t need fancy toys or activities to build language skills sometimes, all you need is what’s right in front of you. 🍂🐌

A funny-looking rock, a fallen tree or even a puddle can become the beginning of an amazing story!

Try starting with “Once upon a time…” and see where your child’s imagination takes you. 💭✨

And remember, there’s no “right” story the goal is to have fun, encourage your child to talk, and give them opportunities to practise putting their ideas into words. 🗣️

🌸 Hello Spring!

🌸 Hello Spring!

Spring is here, and this month we’re celebrating all the wonderful ways that communication, learning and connection can happen beyond the therapy room. 🌿☀️

Our theme for the month is “Speech Pathology in the Great Outdoors” because some of the best learning opportunities can happen while we’re moving, playing, exploring and simply enjoying the world around us.

Who says speech and language practice has to happen sitting at a table? 🌿☀️

Spring is the perfect excuse to get outside, get moving and let communication happen naturally.

A walk, a game, a garden, a playground, a picnic or simply exploring the backyard can create SO many opportunities to talk, listen, learn and connect.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing some of our favourite ways to turn everyday outdoor activities into opportunities for communication and learning. 💬🌸

So, let’s get outside and see where communication takes us! 🌿

💛 R U OK? Day

So

💛 R U OK? Day

Sometimes the most important conversations start with three simple words:

R U OK?
Communication isn’t always about having the right words. Sometimes it’s noticing that someone is quieter than usual, checking in, sitting beside them, listening without trying to fix things, or simply letting someone know, “I’m here if you need me.”

For some people, asking for help, finding the words to explain how they feel, or knowing how to start a conversation can be really difficult.

So today, and every day, let’s make space for different ways of communicating.
💬 Ask the question.
👂 Listen.
❤️ Give them time.
🤝 Stay connected.
💛 Check in again.

And remember, you don’t need to be an expert or have the perfect words. Sometimes simply showing someone that you care can make all the difference.

📚✨ BOOK WEEK AT ACM! ✨📚

We had SO much fun celebrating Book Week last week at ACM!

We asked our team to share some of their favourite books whether they were much-loved childhood favourites, books they now enjoy reading with their own children, or books they love using in their speech pathology sessions.

But we didn’t stop at just sharing the titles! We also asked our team to tell us a little bit about why they love these books, what makes them special and how they can be used to support children’s communication, language, literacy and social skills. 🗣️💬📚

Because we know that books are so much more than just the words on the page! They can be a wonderful way to build vocabulary, develop storytelling skills, practise comprehension, explore emotions, encourage conversation, support literacy and, most importantly, have FUN together.

So, we thought we’d share some of our team’s favourites with you! What was YOUR favourite book growing up? We’d love to know! 👇

🤝 POSSIBILITY TO

🤝 POSSIBILITY TO BELONG

Everyone wants to feel like they are part of something.
To feel included.
To feel understood.
To feel like their voice matters.

Communication can help make that possible. 💬

It’s…
🤝 Joining in with a group
👧 Making and maintaining friendships
🗣️ Sharing your thoughts and opinions
🙋 Asking to be included
🎮 Knowing how to join a game or conversation
❤️ Understanding others and being understood
🏫 Participating in the classroom
🎉 Joining in at parties, sport and community activities
✨ Feeling confident enough to be yourself

For some children, communication challenges can make social situations feel confusing, overwhelming or difficult to navigate. They may want to join in but not know how.

Speech pathology can help children develop the language and social communication skills they need to participate, interact with others and build meaningful relationships.

Because belonging isn’t about fitting in or changing who you are. It’s about having the support and communication tools to be part of the things that matter to you.

If you’ve ever wondered what a Speech Pathologist actually says during a session… here’s a little sneak peek! 👀

From “Tell me more!” to “Your turn, my turn!” and somehow always ending up with “Let’s read one more book…” 📚😂

Our days are filled with encouraging, modelling, questioning, celebrating, problem-solving, playing and of course saying the same things approximately 147 times a day! 🤣

Because behind all those little phrases are big opportunities to build communication, language, confidence and connection.

🌱 POSSIBILITY TO

🌱 POSSIBILITY TO GROW

Growing isn’t just about getting taller.

It’s about developing new skills, becoming more confident, discovering who you are and having the tools to navigate the world around you.

Communication plays an important part in that growth. 💬

It’s…
🌱 Learning a new word and using it independently
🗣️ Becoming more confident expressing thoughts and ideas
💭 Learning to talk about feelings and experiences
🤝 Developing the skills to interact with others
🙋 Learning to ask for help when it’s needed
🎯 Setting goals and working towards them
✨ Trying something new and having the confidence to have a go
❤️Becoming more independent in everyday life

For some children, communication difficulties can make it harder to show what they know, express what they need or confidently participate in everyday experiences.

Speech pathology can support children as they develop the skills they need to communicate, connect, learn and become more independent.

And sometimes growth happens in the smallest moments a new word, a longer conversation, asking a question, joining in, or simply having the confidence to try. 🌱

Because every new skill creates a new possibility.

✨ Communication creates the possibility to GROW.

☕️ Celebrating t

☕️ Celebrating the vision behind ACM

Last week, we celebrated the birthday of our founder, Natalie a very special person whose vision, passion and belief in the power of communication created what is now All Communication Matters.

Each year, we take a moment to honour Natalie’s memory and the incredible legacy she created. This year, we thought we would celebrate in a way that felt very Natalie over a good coffee! ☕️

The team came together to enjoy a drink of their choice, share a few laughs and spend some time remembering Natalie‘s vision for ACM and the difference she wanted to make for the people and families we support.

It was a simple but meaningful way to celebrate the person who started it all and the legacy that continues to grow.

Here’s a little snapshot of some of the ACM team enjoying their drinks and raising a cup to Natalie. ☕️✨

Happy birthday, Natalie. Your vision continues to create possibilities every day. 💜

📚Book Week is the perfect reminder that reading together is about so much more than the words on the page!

When you pause, chat, wonder, predict, laugh and share ideas with your child, you’re creating opportunities for them to build language, communication and early literacy skills all while enjoying a story together.

And remember, there’s no “right” way to do it! Follow your child’s interests, let the conversation wander and have fun with the story. 🗣️💭

📚 POSSIBILITY TO

📚 POSSIBILITY TO LEARN

Learning doesn’t happen only at a desk or in a classroom.
Every day, children are learning to understand, communicate, solve problems, follow instructions, ask questions, remember information and make sense of the world around them.

Communication plays a huge part in all of it. 💬

It’s…
📖 Understanding a story and answering questions
👂 Following instructions in the classroom
🙋 Asking for help when something doesn’t make sense
❓ Asking questions and being curious
💭 Explaining their ideas and sharing what they know
🧠 Remembering and using new information
✏️ Developing the language skills needed for reading and writing
🗣️ Having the confidence to contribute in class
🎓 Understanding what others are saying and knowing how to respond

For some children, difficulties with language, literacy or communication can make learning feel much harder than it needs to be.

Speech pathology can help build the communication skills children need to access learning, participate in the classroom and show what they know.

Because when a child has the right support, new skills can open up new opportunities. ✨

Communication creates the possibility to LEARN. 📚💬

📚 BOOK WEEK WITHO

📚 BOOK WEEK WITHOUT THE PRESSURE

For some children, Book Week is the BEST week of the year.

For others, the costumes, crowds, noise, changes to routine and expectations around participating can feel like a lot.
And both experiences are okay.

Your child doesn’t have to:
❌ Wear a costume
❌ Choose a character
❌ Speak in front of the class
❌ Join every Book Week activity
❌ Have a “perfect” Book Week experience

They might prefer to:
👕 Wear something comfortable
📚 Bring their favourite book
🧸 Take a small character toy
🎨 Draw a character instead
📖 Look at books quietly
👀 Watch rather than participate
🤝 Have support from a familiar adult
💬 Share their ideas in a way that feels comfortable

Participation doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.
Let’s make Book Week about celebrating stories, imagination and communication not about making every child participate in exactly the same way.

Different doesn’t mean less. Different can simply mean different.

POSSIBILITY TO CONNE

POSSIBILITY TO CONNECT ✨

Connection starts with communication. 💬

For a child, being able to communicate can open the door to so many little moments that make a BIG difference:
👋 Saying “hi” to a friend
🎮 Asking someone to play
😂 Sharing a joke or having a laugh together
💬 Telling someone about their favourite thing
🧸 Joining in with other children’s play
🙋 Asking for help when they need it
❤️ Telling someone how they feel
👂 Listening and responding in a conversation
🤝 Taking turns and sharing ideas
🏫 Feeling confident enough to join in at school
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Connecting with family and the people around them

For some children, these things can feel really hard.
They might know exactly what they want to say but struggle to find the words. They might find conversations confusing, have difficulty understanding others, or not yet have the skills to join in with play.

And sometimes, connection looks different. It might be using signs, gestures, pictures, AAC, facial expressions or another way of communicating.

There isn’t one right way to communicate.

Our role as speech pathologists is to help children develop the communication skills they need to connect with the people and world around them in a way that works for them.

Because communication isn’t just about words.

It’s about connection. It’s about belonging. And it’s about creating possibilities. ✨

📚✨ IT’S BOOK

📚✨ IT’S BOOK WEEK! ✨📚 We LOVE books at ACM!

Books aren’t just about learning to read. They are a wonderful way for children to develop language, communication and literacy skills while sharing special moments with the people around them.

Reading together can help children:
📖 Build vocabulary
🗣️ Develop language skills
💭 Talk about ideas and make predictions
👂 Develop listening and comprehension
🌱 Build storytelling skills
❤️ Talk about feelings and experiences
🔤 Develop early literacy skills
🤝 Take turns and have conversations
And the best part?

You don’t have to read every word!
Talk about the pictures. Ask questions. Make silly voices. Let your child choose the book. Predict what might happen next. Stop and wonder together.

Because sometimes the best part of a book isn’t finishing the story...It’s the conversation that happens along the way. 💬

That’s the power of communication it creates possibility.

Throughout Speech Pathology Week, we’ll be sharing some of the many ways communication can create possibilities for children, families and people of all ages.

And, of course, celebrating the amazing speech pathologists who help make those possibilities a reality every day.

Communication create

Communication creates possibilities.

August is a special month for our profession as we celebrate Speech Pathology Week, and this year’s theme is one that we absolutely love:

✨ Communication creates possibilities. ✨
Communication is so much more than talking.

It’s being able to ask, “Can I play too?”
It’s ordering your own lunch. 🥪
It’s telling your teacher, “I don’t understand.”
It’s calling Grandma and Grandpa. 📞
It’s asking for help.
It’s making a choice.
It’s joining in.
It’s saying, “I did it!” 🙌

For our clients, these everyday moments can represent huge achievements building independence, confidence, connection and a sense of belonging.

So, throughout August, we’ll be sharing more around what communication really means. We’ll take you behind the scenes with our amazing clinicians, share insights into the profession, celebrate communication wins, and most importantly, share what communication can mean in the everyday lives of the children and families we work with.

Because every child communicates differently, and every communication journey creates new possibilities.

Communication creates possibilities. And we can’t wait to celebrate them with you this month and throughout Speech Pathology Week.

Have a look inside m

Have a look inside my day in the clinic! 👋

Every day is different, and that’s one of the things I love most about being a speech pathologist.

Today included working with toddlers, preschoolers and school-aged children, each with their own unique strengths, interests and goals. We targeted a wide range of communication, speech, language, literacy and social skills through engaging, evidence-based activities tailored to each child.

Between sessions there was also time for a management meeting and team catch-up because great client outcomes come from a great team working together behind the scenes too!

These snapshots give you a little glimpse into some of the goals we worked on today and how they were targeted.

Next time, I’ll take you behind the scenes of all the fun games and activities we use to make learning meaningful, motivating and enjoyable!

🧲 Play with Purpo

🧲 Play with Purpose: Magnetic Tiles

Magnetic tiles are one of those toys that grow with your child.

Whether you’re building towering castles, creating cosy homes for soft toys, designing garages for cars and LEGO, making colourful patterns, or inventing exciting mazes, the possibilities are endless! The creations are endless and my kids always love a picture of each creation so they can show their siblings one it is pack away time.

The best part? While your child is having fun, they’re also developing important communication skills.

✨ Try these ideas to build skills through play:

🗣️ Language: Talk about colours, shapes, sizes and positions. Use words like next to, under, taller and stronger, and encourage your child to explain their creations or provide verbal instructions on where they want you to place the tiles.
📚 Early Literacy: Create letter shapes, build the first letter of names, follow simple building instructions, or sequence steps from beginning to end.
👫 Social Skills: Take turns adding pieces, work together on one big creation, solve problems as a team, and celebrate each other’s ideas.

The simplest toys often create the richest opportunities for learning. So next time the magnetic tiles come out, remember you’re building so much more than towers!

🚶 Play with Purpo

🚶 Play with Purpose: Go for a Walk Together 🌿🏖️

Whether you’re walking along the beach, exploring the bush or wandering around your neighbourhood, every walk is full of opportunities to build your child’s communication skills.

🗣️ Build Language
• Talk about what you can see, hear, smell and feel.
• Introduce new words from your surroundings like footpath, mailbox, gum leaves, creek, shells, waves, footprints or bird’s nest.
• Ask open-ended questions such as, “What do you think made those footprints?” or “What do you think we’ll discover around the next corner?”

📚 Support Early Literacy
• Look for letters, numbers and signs along the way.
• Play “I Spy” using beginning sounds, colours or shapes.
• Draw letters or simple words in the sand or dirt, or collect sticks and leaves to make letters together.

🤝 Develop Social Skills
• Take turns choosing which direction to walk.
• Encourage conversations by asking and answering questions.
• Work together to complete a nature scavenger hunt or find something of every colour.

The best learning happens through connection.
Every chat, question and shared discovery helps build language, literacy, social skills and confidence. You don’t need special equipment just a little curiosity and time together.

At All Communication Matters, we believe purposeful play can happen anywhere. Sometimes the most valuable learning takes place on a simple walk with the people who matter most.

School reports provi

School reports provide a valuable snapshot of your child’s progress, but they don’t always tell the whole story.

If your child’s report raised questions about their communication, speech, language, literacy or social skills, you’re not alone. Many children benefit from extra support, and seeking advice early can make a significant difference to their confidence, learning and long-term outcomes.

At All Communication Matters, our experienced Speech Pathologists take the time to understand your child as an individual. Through comprehensive assessments and evidence-based therapy, we work alongside families to create personalised plans that support meaningful progress.

Sometimes, all you need is a conversation to better understand your child’s development and whether additional support would be beneficial.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s the right time to seek advice, we’re here to help.

👀 Purposeful Play | Spot It!

One small card game... endless opportunities for learning!

Games like Spot It! are fantastic for building vocabulary, attention, visual scanning, flexible thinking and social communication. The best part? You don’t need to turn it into “therapy.” Simply slow the game down, ask a few extra questions and encourage conversation.

Remember, the goal isn’t to find the matching picture the fastest it’s to create opportunities to talk, think, describe, question and connect.

Which board game would you like us to feature next in our Purposeful Play series? 🎲

Play with Purpose: Bubble Fun! 🫧

Bubbles are one of the simplest toys you can own, but they’re packed with opportunities to build communication skills. Bubbles naturally motivate children to engage, making them a fantastic tool for learning through play. They encourage shared attention, turn-taking, communication, they create excitement, anticipation, and connection, making them the perfect way to build language through everyday play at home, as well as lots of laughter along the way.

So, how can you use bubbles to build language?
🫧Pause before blowing.
Hold the bubble wand ready and wait. This gives your child a reason to communicate. They might look at you, point, sign, use a word like “more” or even say “blow!” Every attempt to communicate counts.
🫧Talk about what you see.
Describe what’s happening using simple language:
* “Big bubbles!”
* “Tiny bubbles.”
* “They’re floating up!”
* “Pop! They’re gone!”
* “Wow, so many bubbles!”
Hearing lots of rich language during play helps children learn new words naturally.
🫧Follow your child’s lead.
Are they chasing bubbles? Popping them? Watching them float? Join in with what interests them and talk about it. Children learn best when we build language around what they’re already enjoying.
🫧Build early concepts.
Bubble play is full of opportunities to teach words like:
* Big / little
* Up / down
* Fast / slow
* More / finished
* In / out
* High / low
* One / lots
These everyday concepts become much more meaningful when children experience them through play.
🫧Encourage conversations.
As children get older, ask open-ended questions:
* “Where do you think the bubbles will go?”
* “Which bubble is the biggest?”
* “Can you catch three bubbles?”
* “What happens if we blow gently? What if we blow hard?”
These questions help develop vocabulary, thinking skills and longer sentences.

🚗 Play with Purpo

🚗 Play with Purpose: Cars, Trucks & Big Adventures!
Does your child love anything with wheels? Cars, trucks, diggers, tractors, buses or emergency vehicles are more than just favourite toys they're incredible tools for building communication, language, literacy and social skills.

The best part? You don't need fancy toys or planned activities. Follow your child's interests and let the play lead the learning.

🚙 At home, you might:• Drive cars around a play mat or homemade town.• Build a garage from blocks or cardboard boxes.• Create ramps using books, cardboard or cushions and see which vehicle travels the furthest.• Design a race track with masking tape indoors or chalk outside.• Wash the cars together and talk about what you can see.

🌿 Take the play outdoors! Some of the best learning happens outside.• Bring diggers and dump trucks to the sandpit or beach.• Build roads through the garden with sticks and rocks.• Create muddy construction sites in the backyard.• Collect leaves, stones and twigs to make bridges, tunnels and obstacles.• Make a nature race track and explore different surfaces—grass, sand, dirt and concrete.
While you're playing, you're naturally creating opportunities to build important communication skills.

🗣️ Build vocabularyIntroduce words like:Fast, slow, enormous, tiny, heavy, empty, full, slippery, steep, bumpy, reverse, accelerate, underneath, beside, around, crash, rescue, load, deliver and repair.

💭 Develop thinking and problem-solvingAsk questions such as:• "Why do you think that car stopped?"• "How can we make the ramp faster?"• "What could we use to build a bridge?"• "Which truck is best for carrying all the rocks?"

🤝 Encourage social skillsPractise:• Taking turns.• Sharing favourite vehicles.• Negotiating roles ("I'll be the firefighter, you can drive the rescue truck.")• Flexible thinking when play doesn't go as planned.• Working together to build roads, garages or obstacle courses.

📖 Grow language through storytellingTurn simple play into an adventure.Maybe the digger is building a new playground, the ambulance is helping someone, or the race cars are travelling across Australia. The more stories you create together, the more opportunities your child has to use new vocabulary, longer sentences and imaginative thinking.

Remember, children learn best when they're engaged in something they genuinely enjoy. You don't need to teach during play you simply need to join in. Every drive, every dig and every adventure is another opportunity to Play with Purpose.

Play with Purpose- W

Play with Purpose- What’s in the Mystery Bag? 🎒🕵️

Looking for an activity that grows with your child? A Mystery Bag is a simple game that can be adapted from toddlers right through to late primary school.

All you need is a bag and a few everyday items from around the house (e.g. a spoon, toy car, peg, sock, pencil, block, key, leaf or small toy).

How to play:
Take turns reaching into the bag without looking. Feel one object and see if you can guess what it is before pulling it out!
Then extend the learning based on your child’s age.

Toddlers & Preschoolers:
🧸 Name the object.
🎨 Talk about its colour, size and what it feels like.
💬 Model simple phrases such as “It’s soft!”, “I found a car!” or “My turn.”

Early Primary:
🔎 Give clues instead of naming the object.
🗂️ Sort items into categories (things you wear, things in the kitchen, toys).
✏️ Think of words that rhyme or begin with the same sound.
📝 Use the object in a sentence.

Late Primary:
🧠 Describe the object using precise vocabulary without saying its name.
💡 Explain how you knew what it was using clues from touch.
📚 Create a story that includes three mystery objects.
🎯 Challenge each other to think of synonyms, multiple meanings or as many describing words as possible.

✨ Why speech pathologists love this activity:
It naturally develops vocabulary, descriptive language, listening, reasoning, inferencing, conversation skills, turn-taking, narrative skills and confidence all while children are simply having fun.

The best activities aren’t the most expensive they’re the ones that create opportunities to talk, think, imagine and connect.

Save this idea for your next rainy day or family game night and follow along for more Play with Purpose activities!
